Coinciding with Etisalat’s planned gradual expansion of their telecom and ICT outsourcing services, the company held an event in Dubai yesterday on optimizing cost and boosting performance of ICT infrastructure.

Speaking at the forum, Abdulla Hashim, Etisalat’s vice president of Enterprise Solutions said: “Radical enablement of business using IT is challenging, and this is especially true when you consider the fast pace and increasing complexity of technology growth. This is where Etisalat is playing a leading role by offering a complete end-to-end telecom and ICT solutions portfolio, giving organizations the flexibility to outsource their non core IT needs. Thus IT departments can be transforming from being just a technical support group into a real enabler for change in their company.”

Hashin went on to say that the IT outsourcing industry in the UAE tripled from between 2004 and 2006, from $27.6 million to $81.3 million, despite the fact that the region’s IT services have not matured much.

Reasons the industry may be hesitant to adopt IT outsourcing include security concerns, a loss of control and the subsequent need to downsize staff.

Angus MacCormick, Cisco’s Senior Director for Strategic Customs and Advanced Technologies, Emerging Markets was also present at the event, speaking about key trends in the IT industry. MacCormick claimed any and all advances could be divided in three broad themes: Empowered Users, which leads to personalization and grass-roots movements, Real-time Information, which requires information to be virtual, secure and integrated, and finally Borderless Enterprise, which takes advantage of networked information to allow a company to be responsive and reactive in changing environments.
