My first CEO: Basel Al Kasem

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Sunday, 30 March 2008
Basel Al Kasem, CEO at Al Basel Group.

A CEO must have a strong belief in themselves and their business.

Who was your first, or most influential, CEO or mentor?

This would certainly have to be Haitham Belhasa; he is a friend, a colleague and a teacher. Haitham is a person of high qualifications, strong ethics and business wisdom, and is always courteous.

What 3 things did they teach you?

The importance of ethics in today's business world; the necessity of strategic thinking and implementation; and the benefits of group work.

How did they mould your work philosophy?

The UAE real estate sector is a dynamic, albeit challenging, market, and closing deals and achieving higher sales are not easy tasks. I try to adopt the many lessons I have learnt to ensure my personal and professional credibility at all times. I have been told that this reliability and integrity are some of the reasons why my clients trust their investments with me.

Name an example of when you have made a difference to your business.

In business, always put down high goals and outline a clear path to achieving them. In a recent meeting with H.R.H. Prince Abdullah Bin Musaed Al Saud, I was presenting a project when the Prince said to me: 'Basel, I will listen to you only once'.

I replied: 'Prince I need you to listen to me only once, it will be a credible investment and you will also pursue other projects.' The Prince smiled and invested a large amount with me.

What qualities do you look for in your team?

I have high expectations for my team. I demand loyalty, knowledge, successful selling skills and professionalism at all times, as well as total dedication to the task at hand, honesty, commitment to excellence and willingness to learn. I hope that these traits help to set us apart.

What three qualities should every CEO have?

These qualities are difficult to define, and every day my thoughts change about what makes the best CEO. However, I believe that understanding about the business and the team; dedication to work; and leadership are the key essential qualities for every CEO.

In a few words, what advice would you have for an aspiring CEO?

People who aspire to become a CEO must have a strong belief in themselves and their business; must trust their instincts; make bold decisions; and know that nothing is impossible.
