Cisco to provide technology solutions for GEMS World Academy

by Quintin Smith on Tuesday, 25 March 2008
Sam Al Kharrat, Cisco Systems General Manager for the Gulf region and Pakistan

Dubai’s GEMS World Academy is going to become the first school to make use of Cisco’s Digital Media System, a comprehensive digital media communications solution that involves the delivery of high-quality live and on-demand media.

The international school for 4-18 year-olds plans to make use of digital distribution during lectures and school events, with further plans to extend the technology to classrooms. The idea is that students will then have instant access to high quality remote broadcasts, study material and live lectures.

The chairman of GEMS, Sunny Varkey, has stated that the academy believes in “providing education beyond the classroom”, and that visual media is “an essential component of classroom instruction and a powerful way to communicate with and educate students.”

The process will be implemented by Alpha Data, a Cisco Silver Certified Partner.

Sam Alkharrat, managing director, Cisco, Gulf and Pakistan said, “With the growth of technologies such as broadband, digital media and streaming content, video is an essential resource and productivity enhancer, bringing immediacy and intimacy into classroom communications.”
