AXA Gulf employees have helped to clean up the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary.

Employees of the leading insurance provider devoted one day of their weekend to collecting 600kg of rubbish, clearing one and a half kilometres of land as part of the firm's Hearts in Action programme.

"The AXA Hearts in Action Gulf initiative is a region wide one that will focus on an environmental concern," said the company's CEO Andrea Rossi.

"The aim is to unify employees who have different religions and cultures in a common interest that connects them all - that of philanthropy."

Environment department director Hamdan Al Shaer said that there was a crucial need to preserve the natural haven of Ras Al Khor.

"It is threatened by inorganic waste such as plastic that does not assimilate into the environment and is not biodegradable," he added.

"We welcome it when companies come to us saying they would like to clean up a public area or would like to be part of an environmental cause. I hope this will encourage more companies to come forward and be part of sustainable development in the UAE."
