Al Raha Gardens connects to Etisalat’s FTTH network

by Quintin Smith on Wednesday, 26 March 2008

Abu Dhabi's Al Raha Gardens villa development has connected to Etisalat’s FTTH network, making it one of the first areas in the Middle East to make use of fibre-to-the-home technology.

Traditionally the ‘Last Mile’ of telecommunications is done with either wireless technology or simple copper wiring. FTTH technology is the next generation of connectivity, and achieves high bandwidth speeds by running fibre optic cables directly into homes and workplaces.

Many telecoms companies such as AT&T feel that copper is sufficient for current bandwidth requirements, but this hasn’t stopped Etisalat from embarking on a project that will see FTTH networks created across the UAE over the next few years.

Etisalat has stated that it expects to have an FTTH customer base in the hundreds of thousands by the end of 2008. The company is calling Al Raha Gardens’ adoption of the technology a “starting point”.

Ousama Ghannoum, marketing & media director of ALDAR Properties, explained the decision: “Part of the delivery on our projects is ensuring that the occupiers have access to services that will enhance the lifestyle offering. We are pleased that this network will be able to provide such an efficient service to Al Raha Gardens.”

Essa Al Haddad, chief marketing officer, Etisalat, said:” With this technology, customers will be able to enjoy many services including fixed-line calls, television services over the internet protocol IPTV (Advanced digital TV), many other services that require high speed internet service, telephony, and other high-bandwidth online experiences such as gaming and video-on-demand (VOD). Customers will be able to indulge in this through only one consolidated connection insuring high quality and standard of services.”
