Analysts expect 3G iPhone to hit before Summer

Bank of America analyst Scott Craig has released a report stating his expectation that Apple will launch a 3G version of its iPhone in the second quarter of 2008, and go on to produce up to eight million units in the third quarter.
3G, or ‘Third Generation’ network compatible chipsets are capable of connecting to the internet wherever they have a mobile phone signal, and are capable of faster data speeds than 2G phones. Currently iPhone users outside of wifi networks have to connect to EDGE or GPRS networks which don’t offer the speed or performance of 3G.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said last year that a third generation iPhone would happen when battery technology had improved, as 3G chips require more power than 2G chips.
Craig said: "Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone beginning in the month of June after an initial small build in May.” Many others analysts believe Apple’s announcement of a 3G iPhone will happen at some point around the company’s upcoming developer conference in June.
Following the release of the report Apple shares closed at $143.01, a rise of $2.76.
