Dubai Silicon Oasis and Synopsys sign University Program Partnership Agreement
by Quintin Smith on Sunday, 30 March 2008
As part of the memorandum of understanding signed recently between the Ministry of Education and technology park Dubai Silicon Oasis, DSO has signed another deal with Synopsys to provide four UAE educational institutions with Synopsys’ Electronic Design Automation software.
The software tools, which are used to design and verify integrated circuit (IC) chips within the semiconductor industry, are valued at millions of dollars. In providing them for free it’s hoped they’ll help bridge the technological gap between industry and the nation’s academic institutions.
Mohammed Al Zarouni, director general of Dubai Silicon Oasis, said: “We are identifying and addressing the mechanisms needed to groom highly experienced and talented trained graduates from this region to fill the manpower gap in the areas of semiconductors and IC chip design. This is just the first step in a long-term academic association and partnership with Synopsys.”
Meanwhile Rich Goldman, vice president, Strategic Market Development of Synopsys, said: "As Synopsys establishes in Dubai with DSO, we have deep understanding of the importance of developing a high-tech industry for the region. Synopsys has developed the University Program to provide academic institutions with world-class EDA tools that help students prepare for tackling the most advanced real-world designs."
The institutions receiving the software have been named as the UAE University-Al Ain (UAEU), the University of Sharjah (UoS), Etisalat University College (EUC) and the American University of Sharjah (AUS).
