GCC's first women-only property opens

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Monday, 31 March 2008
The newly opened Luthan Hotel and Spa in Riyadh.

Owned and run by a group of business women, the 25-room boutique property includes restaurants and conference halls as well as the spa, which opened in 2005.

Luthan Hotel and Spa executive director Lorraine Coutinho said the property was "creating benchmarks for the industry in the Kingdom and beyond".

"The response...has been tremendous; the business or leisure lady-traveller knows that she has a safe, luxurious sanctuary at Luthan," Coutinho said.

Although chain properties such as Marriott already offer women-only floors, Coutino said she believed Luthan could offer guests more.

"We [can] give our lady guests tailor-made facilities that big-name chains cannot afford due to mass standardisation of processes," she explained.

Coutinho added that the demand for women-only spaces in the region was increasing.

"[Globally,] the Luthan Hotel and Spa is simply satisfying the demand that already exists for these services; we are not actually setting a trend. However in Saudi Arabia we are leading the way."

Coutinho added that the brand would "definitely expand" in the future: "The process of providing luxury getaways and occupational security for the travelling woman is our goal. We are sure that the women travelling through the Kingdom will not only value this, but also encourage more such projects".
