Indian Big Mac sells for $10,000

A McDonalds burger priced at 42 Indian rupees was sold for a staggering 400,000 rupees ($10,000) on Tuesday at a charity auction held to mark the American chain's first outlet in Chennai.

The money raised is being donated to The Banyan, a charity that takes care of homeless women in India.

The successful bidder, according to the Indo-Asian News Service, was Shiva Kumaar P.R., managing director of Saravana Bhavan Holdings.

The Big Mac is used as an economic indicator around the world. The Big Mac index tracks the price of the burger in different countries, and gives an indicator of prevailing retail prices and the strength of a currency.
