Named after the President of the UAE, HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, Khalifa A City is located 25 kilometres from Downtown Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Municipality commissioned KEO to conduct a study to enhance the amount of green space in the city.

"[We] asked that the city include more services, and provide as many parks and walkable opportunities as possible for its citizens," said Juma'a Junaibi, director general of the Department of the Municipality.

The study has resulted in a new masterplan by KEO that will introduce 26 new neighbourhood parks, four new community parks and a district park. These open green spaces will be connected by a coherent and unified streetscape that will transform the road network into a pedestrian-friendly walkway linking the entire city.

The masterplan also creates a new CBD with Khalifa Celebration Square, designed to act as a ‘downtown' area with a variety of civic and cultural destinations. "The ideas and recommendations in our study are also very much drawn from the inspiration and collaborations from all levels of government. What we saw was a real commitment to providing much needed enhancements and services back to its citizens," said Donna Sultan, KEO CEO.

The project is expected to cost over US$502.4m for the first phases.
