Australian tennis legend reveals future plans to launch a tennis training academy in the UAE.

Australian tennis star Pat Cash has revealed plans for a tennis training academy in the UAE in an exclusive interview with Leisure Manager.

"I've got a tennis academy in Australia and I'm looking at doing other coaching around the world. Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, are places I'm very interested in," said Cash.

"I'm actually talking to some people, I wouldn't like to say too much yet, but I think there's a good chance that I'll be involved in something here," he revealed.

Cash set up his Australian academy six years ago on the Gold Coast. Called The Pat Cash International Tennis Academy, it is aimed at players of all levels.

Cash said: "The great thing is tennis courts don't cost an awful lot of money and tennis is a great active sport physically for kids. It's good for co-ordination and it's a game you can play forever as well, plus it doesn't cost you a fortune to play a game either."

Although plans for an academy in this region are only in the preliminary stages, setting it up should not be too much of a challenge.

"That's the good thing about tennis; you just need tennis courts. You don't need specially designed facilities like you do in golf which cost millions of dollars to set up, you just need tennis courts and then some facilities for training and extras for the top level sort of stuff," said Cash.

The former professional tennis player who last played on the circuit in Dubai around 12 years ago was in the emirate last month to watch the women's' tournament in The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

"The tournament itself is a fantastic tournament, there's no doubt about that," said Cash, who was appointed as a tennis ambassador for title sponsor Barclays.

"A lot of the tournaments at this stage are going into winter so it's nice to come out here and get some warm weather as well. It's not as much prize money (as other tournaments) but as far as the player participation, it's very strong - about as strong as you can get really.

"It's actually perfect conditions for tennis. They are nice paced courts - not too fast not too slow - so it suits all types of players," continued Cash.

"I think the tournament has taken a bit of a step up since Barclays has come in and it's going to get better. The executives at Barclays' really want to do some good things with the event," he said.

"Hopefully I'll come back to Dubai and play myself later in the year as well in The Legends event. We really enjoyed that last year," added Cash.
