Harvard Medical International (HMI), Dubai Healthcare City's most prominent partner, has announced it is to split all formal ties with its parent institution.
HMI will function as Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI) and will cease to be owned or operated by Harvard University. The company will instead become as a member of Partners Healthcare, the Massachusetts-based health-care delivery group.
In a joint statement from Harvard Medical School and Harvard University, the two bodies said the organization had now "expanded beyond its original charter".
Although PHMI has stated it will honour all of its existing contracts, it is unclear to what extent Harvard University or Harvard Medical School will remain actively involved following the spin-off.
It is rumoured that unease over the use of the Harvard brand in overseas projects was a driving factor in the break-up.
