PATA practices what it preaches
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Tuesday, 08 April 2008
The Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA) is leading by example in making conferences greener by employing Green Globe to help offset the carbon emissions generated at the PATA CEO Challenge: confronting global climate change.
The event will bring together leading decision makers from the travel and tourism industry to address the issue of climate change before industry regulators impose tough taxes on the aviation industry, which will have a dramatic knock-on international business and leisure travel, according to PATA CEO Peter de Jong.
"We need to practice what we preach," said Peter de Jong, CEO, PATA.
"We haven't done very well in the past with goodie bags and all the stuff that we force upon our unsuspecting delegates, which is then promptly tossed into the bin in the hotel room, so we are rethinking all of our systems."
De Jong also said that there would be no bottled water at the event - just pitchers of water - and a large number of clearly marked recycling bins so delegates know what type of waste to put in each bin.
"Some of us, PATA included, weren't always in the forefront of this; we were fairly late adopters of this particular topic and could have done more, better, sooner, I will be the first to admit it," de Jong added.
"We are now aware of the train coming towards us and are trying to catch up and do this as quickly and efficiently as possible and for us that means industry action.
The PATA CEO Challenge is set to take place in Bangkok from April 29-30.
