Norwegian wood tops the charts once again.
For some it may be considered odious for your next result on a Google search to be for a company selling animal identification tags, but to a certain extent such a thought leads us straight into considering the Norwegian-built Nordic Star 33 Runabout - how can she be identified?
Built for cutting safely and speedily across Norwegian fjords, the retro-styled Nordic Star 33 Runabout certainly stands out among the raft of modern-styled hulls that frequent the local Arabian Gulf waters. Its deep blue hull and soft prow belie the modern propulsion options and fine-tuned handling.
After attending the Gulf Boating Conference at the Dubai International Boat Show in 2006, I was inspired to do a bit of research into what boats would do well in the future," explained Richard Scott, Director of the Nordic Star importers, Yaeger Marine International.
"I wanted to bring something different to the market, something that would suit the environment and the future cruising needs of GCC residents."
Combining his knowledge of the prosperous Norwegian marine market, and a belief in pushing client aspirations, Richard finally found the company exhibiting at a boat show in Shanghai.
The Nordic Star series immediately appealed to me because it is more of a custom build than it is production," he continued. "Built for the demanding needs of the Norwegian weather, and owners that believe a boat is to be used whatever the conditions, every Nordic Star model can be modified to suit the exact needs of the owner.
For instance, I upgraded the air conditioning and engine to ensure this Runabout model not only has a cool interior, but also had the performance to suit the Gulf's calmer seas." Our first impression concurred as the craft exudes all the charm of a classic gentleman's cruiser.
Combining a stylish combination of curved naval architecture, teak decks and detailing, all structured on a light GRP hull, the Runabout rides high on the water, drawing just 0.77 of a metre with the standard sterndrive configuration; or even less at 0.47 metres if the Hamilton waterjet option is taken.
Whether moored abeam or jumping aboard when leaving, the sturdy teak bathing platform makes a natural first step onto the craft, from where a small rise of the leg takes you onto the teak aft deck, which provides a perfect viewpoint over the whole cockpit layout.
The first aspect that catches any eye is the fantastic use of raw teak throughout the construction. From the cambered side decks and cockpit sole, to the foredeck grabrail and caprail covering the windscreen.
Matched with polished stainless pop-up cleats and protective guides to prevent chaffing when warps or fenders are attached, every detail shines confidentently, indicating every aspect of the boat has been considered.
Maximising the 2.7-metre beam amidships, the thigh-high coaming emphasises the sensation of available space, whilst polished teak louvred doors cover the bulwarks that provide deep recesses for storage.
From the curved transom bench seat cushions, which can all be lifted to reveal extra storage, the centre of the boat is dominated by the polished wooden engine compartment that doubles up as a useful table when stationery.
