Jet Airways seeks cargo partner
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Tuesday, 08 April 2008
Jet Airways is reportedly examining the prospect of creating a new cargo airline in collaboration with a European partner.
To date, India's largest private airline has not revealed the prospective European carrier's name, but according to sources in Germany, it has been holding talks with Lufthansa Cargo.
Jet Airways currently has a cooperation deal with the German carrier's technical division Lufthansa Technik. The joint venture could possibly be established by the end of this year.
"Some 12% of our revenue comes from cargo transportation. We are planning to increase this share to about 30% in the future," said Naresh Goyal, chairman, Jet Airways.
The airline has in the meantime been busy extending its code-sharing agreement with Brussels Airline to include Berlin, Lyon and Barcelona. Primarily designed to increase passenger traffic, Jet Airways is confident the move will also have a positive effect on its cargo traffic.
The Brussels hub also features strongly in the company's future plans to connect additional cities between the Indian and North American regions.
"Flights between Mumbai and San Francisco are already on the cards and should start in a few months, probably in early May," added Goyal.
