A new report from the World Economic Forum featuring the latest Networked Readiness Index rankings has named the UAE’s economy as the 29th most networked in the world, making it number one in the Middle East.

This year marked the Global Information Technology Report’s seventh iteration. Since its first release the report has gained a reputation as the most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of ICT today.

Qatar followed the UAE at 32nd place, then Kuwait at 42nd, Bahrain at 45th, Saudi Arabia at 48th and Oman as 53rd.

Denmark came first, followed by Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

The Global Information Technology Report surveys 127 countries, and features various essays and case studies regarding network readiness, and ICT growth and development.

Irene Mia, a senior WEF economist and co-editor of the report said that this year the report "is released at a time in which the importance of high bandwidth connectivity for countries' competitiveness, sustained growth, and poverty reduction is widely recognised. Facilitating access and effective use of ICT has increasingly moved to the top of national agendas in most developed and developing economies, while more resources are invested in ICT infrastructure upgrading and development."
