First Intel Atom-powered phone unveiled

Japanese mobile service provider Willcom has today announced that the company will be selling the world’s first handset to be powered by Intel’s Atom chipset, and has released some details on the device.

The D4 is the work of Sharp Electronics and features a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. The handset also boasts a full QWERTY keyboard, wi-fi, 1024x600 screen, a USB port, micro SD card slot and a 2 megapixel camera.

All of this is said to weigh in at 470g.

Willcom has said the device should retail for ¥128,600 ($1275), and will only be available with a two year contract at ¥1600 ($16) a month.

The move comes as something of a surprise, as Intel has previously stated that the new, low-power Atom technology won’t be ready for mobile phones until 2009 at the earliest.
