Oman Air is the latest Middle East airline to unveil plans for in-flight mobile phone services.

Like other carriers across the region, the Omani airline wants to install communication technology, enabling travellers to make calls and send text messages using mobile phones from 2009.

Internet access via seat back entertainment screens will also be available, according to Oman Air officials.

In-flight communications developer OnAir is installing the new technology on seven A330 planes, which Oman Air expects to receive by 2009. The planes will be deployed on long-haul routes to Europe and Asia.

The airline also revealed that cabin crew will be able to turn off the system or switch to email and text messages only.

Ziad Karim Al Haremi, Oman Air CEO, said, "Oman Air has consistently contributed to the technological advance of commercial aviation. We always aim to improve our services and as we introduce our long-haul routes, we are pleased to be one of the first airlines to offer the full range of passenger communications options.

"We selected OnAir because it is the only provider that can offer a fully integrated solution that includes both mobile and internet services."
