ATLANTIS ARRIVES: An artist's impression of Atlantis, the Palm resort which will open in September.

Atlantis, the Palm will open its doors on the Palm Jumeirah in September, becoming the first resort to operate on the manmade island, developer Kerzner International said on Wednesday.

Kerzner said the 1,539-room resort, a $1.5 billion joint venture between Kerzner and Dubai-owned Istithmar, began accepting bookings in February and is creating worldwide interest.

The developer expects Middle East residents will account for 30% of all visitors, with UAE residents expected to make up a quarter of guests from the region. Rates will start at $454 per night.

The property spans 113 acres on the top of the Palm Jumeirah and includes a 42-acre water themed amusement park, several marine-themed attractions, retail outlets and a nightclub.

The resort will also offer four celebrity chef restaurants including top chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, who intends to open a Nobu restaurant with actor Robert DeNiro.

Atlantis will be accessible via a six-lane underwater vehicle tunnel or a monorail leading through the centre of the island to the resort.

Palm Jumeriah master developer Nakheel intends to transform the island into one of the world's premier resorts with an average of 25,000 hotel guests and 20,000 visitors a day.

More than 30 five star hotels are planned for the Palm Jumeirah, including the Trump International Hotel and Tower, which launches later this year. The development also features marinas and a purpose built theatre for Cirque du Soleil.
