Saudi-UK fighter jet deal in jeopardy

A British government contract to supply Saudi Arabia with Eurofighter Typhoon planes could be in jeopardy because of an internal US administration debate over whether to approve the deal, The UK's Financial Times reported on Friday.

The US State Department must approve the transfer of US technology on the fighter before Britain can export 72 Eurofighter Typhoons to Saudi Arabia, the newspaper said.

British defence company BAE Systems is the prime contractor for Britain on the deal.

The State Department wants to approve the deal but has encountered resistance from the Justice Department, according to a senior administration official, the FT reported.

The Justice Department is concerned that approval could hamper an investigation into whether BAE violated US laws by allegedly bribing Saudi officials over a previous arms deal known as Al-Yamamah, the FT said.

BAE has denied any wrongdoing. (Reuters)

U.S. administration may block UK - Saudi Eurofighter deal
Posted by John Brian Shannon, White Rock, Canada on 24 April 2008 at 04:57 UAE time

If the U.S. decides to block the Eurofighter deal, I hope Saudi Arabia simply looks at it as an opportunity to deal directly with the decision-makers/builders of their next arms purchase.

If every deal done with Europe is capable of being vetoed by the U.S. - then why deal with the Europeans in the first place?

Go direct to Russia or China where hassle-free shopping is the norm. The latest fighter jets available from Russia and China are easily as advanced as the latest jets from the UK and the US.
