Apple has tweaked its online Windows update tool, following allegations that the firm was sneaking its Safari browser onto PCs.

The company's Automatic Update 2.1 utility now includes a box labeled 'New Software', and a separate box for relevant software updates.

This redesign follows criticism of Apple's decision last month to include its Safari browser for Windows along with a QuickTime and iTunes security update.

Apple hasn't acknowledged recent comments, but stated that the changes were made to enhance usability. Anuj Nayar, a representative for Apple stated, “In this latest release we have made it easier for customers to identify between software updates and new applications.”

Although the firm has included a separate box for new software, items in this box are presently checked by default - a decision that possibly led to CEO of Mozilla John Lilly's blog comment that Apple has “a bit more to do”.
