Dubai is in talks with Airbus and Boeing to buy aircraft for its new budget airline, an official confirmed on Monday.
Negotiations were ongoing with both manufacturers over the choice of suitable planes, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of the Emirates group, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum told Emirates Business 24/7.
“The talks take into consideration the models available for delivery when the new carrier starts its operations within a year along with the capacity of the planes and their operational efficiency,” he said.
The number of planes the airline plans to buy was not confirmed, however Airbus Middle East president Habib Fekih said it could purchase between 50 and 70 aircraft over the next five years, according to UAE daily Gulf News.
The new carrier will be part of the state-owned Emirates group, and will fly to destinations within four and a half hours of the UAE.
