NEW CONTRACT: A stand-off over salary had triggered speculation that Wes Brown could be on his way out of Old Trafford. (AFP)

England defender Wes Brown has signed a new contract that will keep him at Manchester United until 2012, the club confirmed on Monday.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had named Brown on Friday as one of three players - along with Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand - to have agreed new deals with the English Premier League leaders.

Brown's previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season and a lengthy stand-off over the level of his salary had triggered speculation that the defender could be on his way out of Old Trafford.

But the issue has now been resolved and the player, who came through the United ranks, will be extending a 12-year association with the club.

"Manchester United is a fantastic club and I am delighted to have signed a new deal," he said. "To be part of a team I have supported all my life is a great honour. I can see this team winning many trophies in the coming seasons and it will be great to share in that success."

Ferguso praised the defender's contribution in a campaign in which he has stood in for injured club captain Gary Neville at right back.

"I am delighted Wes has signed a new contract, he has grown up at this club and is an integral part of the squad," said the Scot.

"He has done a great job during Gary's absence and has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance."
