Western Digital unleash world's fastest SATA hard drive

Western Digital today unveiled the WD VelociRaptor, an ‘evolution’ of their 10,000 RPM, 3.5 inch Raptor hard drives.

WD say that the VelociRaptor is the fastest SATA hard drive currently available, that it’s a whole 35% faster than the previous champion, and that at 300GB it also boasts double the capacity.

The VelociRaptor actually manages all this in 2.5 inches of space, but the device is enclosed in a 3.5 inch mounting frame that features a vital heatsink.

And apparently, the unit’s speed doesn’t come from sacrificing safety. The VelociRaptor’s tested Mean Time Between Failures clocks in at 1.4 million hours, giving it the highest reliability rating of any SATA drive.

Tom McDorman, vice president and general manager of WD’s enterprise business unit said: “We created WD VelociRaptor hard drives to lead PC enthusiasts into the next era of PC and Mac storage performance and satisfy their insatiable thirst for computing speed. The new WD VelociRaptor delivers the greatest performance and reliability of all SATA hard drives currently on the market.”

The WD VelociRaptor will be available at select distributors from mid May with a recommended retail price of $300.
