Developer’s commitment is key

Macro pledged its support to the industry this month with the sponsorship of the Developer's Commitment to efficient buildings that is up for the taking at the first facilities management Middle East Awards in June.

"The developers are the ones who have the biggest impact on facilities management. They can steer it in a number of ways. They can think about it or forget about it, but my preference is that they think about it and by giving out this award, hopefully the FM profile will be raised among the developers," said Bill Heath, managing director, Macro.

The aim of the Award is to reward and recognise the developer who can prove it has been forward thinking about the management and maintenance of its development(s) by introducing FM at an early stage.

The topic is an on-going battle for the industry and one that is well documented, but developer's introducing FM at design can expect cost savings, more efficiently run buildings and a more attractive asset to potential clients.

Macro started business in Dubai back in 2003 when it worked as a FM consultant on Jumeriah Beach Residence.

Its current projects include work on Emaar's Old Town, some with MAF and some system work with Emaar.

"We're hopeful that we've got a contract in Bahrain for FM consultancy through the design process. We will be a member of the design team right at the beginning of the project, which for us is excellent because you can have the strongest influence in terms of energy, operational use etc," confirms Heath.

When asked why Macro decided to sponsor the Awards, Heath said: "The industry needs a raised profile in this market place and one way of doing this is the awards. I'm very much a fan of them. When Macro started up in 2002 in the UK, we did exactly the same. We sponsored some awards and we thought it gave us a number of benefits in getting our recognition out there but equally showing that we believe in the industry and that we support and back it."

Macro's annual turnover currently stands at US $81.6m (AED 300m) and the company has over 250 staff. It is part of the Mace international team that decided to bring facilities management over to the Middle East. Macro is currently trading under the Mace licence and is in the process of establishing itself.

"We're pushing to grow the business over here, but at present we've got established experience and capability in the UK which we draw upon as and when we need it," Heath commented.
