AMD reaffirms green commitment
by Jason Saundalkar on Sunday, 27 April 2008
AMD has launched two new 45-watt energy efficient dual-core processors; the Athlon X2 4450e and Athlon X2 4050e, in line with its long-term goal to promote energy efficient computing for consumers and business users.
"These processors reflect the latest efforts by AMD to stay in front of efficient computing developments, providing processors that help enable our industry partners to build systems that meet new Energy Star computer specifications," said Leslie Sobon, the director of product and brand management of AMD's desktop division.
AMD staff claim both CPUs target mainstream and enthusiast power users who run multiple applications simultaneously. Both processors are said to reduce power consumption by as much as 30% - compared to older AMD chips - and thus offer a far better performance-per-watt.
The company also says the two CPUs are designed to help reduce noise and heat emissions and, as a result, offer a more pleasant computing experience. When either of these processors is combined with a motherboard based on AMD's own 780G core-logic-chipset, AMD claims processor power consumption is drastically reduced when the CPU is under light load or in an idle state.
