Innocent drivers could score black points

POINTS WARNING: Drivers could be held responsible for offences they did not commit unless they complete ownership transfers in full, police warned on Sunday. (Getty Images)

UAE motorists could be hit with traffic black points or fines relating to vehicles they no longer own, police warned on Sunday.

Drivers risk bearing responsibility for traffic offences committed after the sale of their vehicles unless ownership transfers are completed in full, UAE daily reported a police statement as saying.

“The first owner of a vehicle and the showroom supervisors where the sale deed of a vehicle is processed will be held responsible for any offences related to the vehicle in case ownership transfer procedures have not been completed in full,” it said.

Head of traffic offences Juma Al-Hosani said vehicles sold without a full legal process remained the responsibility of the first owner until the new owner admitted offences.

“If the second owner does not own up his act then it is up to the first owner to prove his innocence in a court of law,” he said.

Abu Dhabi police said last Thursday they had issued more than 14,000 tickets since the black points traffic violation system was introduced on March 1 in a bid to reduce fatalities on the country’s roads.

The first law in the civilised world is that you are innocent until proven guilty? So here you are guilty unless you prove your innocence?
