Healthy staff equals healthy profits

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Monday, 05 May 2008
DH staff feel benefits of wellness.

Dubai Holding sets the standards for corporate wellness programmes.

Government investment department Dubai Holding (DH) is encouraging companies to develop a wellness programme after the success of its own in-house initiative.

A year after the start of the DH corporate wellness programme, DH says it has seen a significant improvement in the health, physical activity and performance of its employees.

A spokesman for DH said: "It is hoped that the DH example will spread as a model for all other private and public organisations in the Middle East region.

"The fight against chronic disease through employee wellness programmes is essential and we encourage other companies in the region to implement similar programmes," he said.

The wellness culture has spread across the organisation leading to benefits for business performance and activity according to executive chairman of operations for Dubai Holding, Fadel Al Ali.

"Health issues can have direct consequences and impact business, continuity and performance.

"The Wellness Programme will improve employees' overall performance, reduce indirect costs and raise productivity levels," he said.

Maintaining efficiency at work was seen as a critical factor to the success of achieving company goals according to DH.

Overseeing the wellness programme is wellness manager Cedric Betis, a specialist with more than 10 years' experience in the fitness industry.

"More and more companies recognise that healthy employees lead to higher productivity.

"Businesses also stand to gain significant competitive advantage through cost benefits accruing from reduced absenteeism and heightened productivity," Betis said.

This is the first time a programme of this magnitude has been implemented in the Middle East and Betis said he is positive about the effects the programme will have.

"This programme will phenomenally change the lives of our employees for the better," he said.
