Oracle maintained its lead in the database market in 2007, extending its share to 44.1% of the total market, according to IDC.
The overall worldwide RDBMS market grew by 12.1% to $18.6 billion last year, with ongoing product improvements helping to drive growth.
Carl Olofson, research vice president for IDC's Information Management and Data Integration software research program commented: "2007 was a year that saw continued steady growth in the relational database management systems market, with signal improvements on the part of some of the top 5 vendors in this space. All have put an increased emphasis on performance and manageability as well as greater flexibility and utility of such features as standby databases."
IBM held the second slot in the database market, with 21.3% share, followed by Microsoft with 18.3% share. Teradata just took fourth place from Sybase, with both recording 3.4% market share.
"This market is likely to settle into a pattern of gradual long-term growth, though specific segments, such as the midmarket, and embedded DBMS should grow well ahead of the overall market. In addition, capabilities such as Web service support, XML data support, and support for blended management of unstructured and structured data should give vendors of such capabilities a competitive advantage," Olofson added.
