LEED status key to contract wins

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 03 May 2008

Employing professionals qualified to international green standards will be key to future contract wins, according to an industry expert.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professionals (AP) will be essential for gaining work on major projects, stressed MEP consultancy Red Engineering Design's Ray Choi.

Dubai's Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department, which regulates the majority of construction projects in the Emirate, has recently announced that consultancies must have engineers with LEED AP status if they are to win work on key developments, reports Red.

Choi is based in Red's Dubai office and has recently gained LEED AP status. He explains: "Using the LEED criteria we can guide clients from an early stage, determining the LEED rating they envisage and ensuring the factors that affect LEED credits are accounted for in the early stages of the design.

These include many criteria that often aren't given sufficient consideration in advance, such as site selection, building, orientation and proximity to public transport."

It is particularly important to understand local conditions and needs in developing the most appropriate design strategy, stressed Choi.

The firm recommends the use of energy modelling software in conjunction with expert low carbon consultants to enable precise prediction of energy savings to gain maximum LEED points. A comprehensive range of knowledge and experience is essential stated Choi.
