Qatar project carbon neutral

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 10 May 2008

Sabban Property Investments (SPI) says that its US $330 million (QAR1.2 billion) Sabban Towers development on The Pearl Qatar is the first development in the Middle East to have achieved a 100% carbon neutral status.

This follows a region-wide drive to promote better environmentally friendly construction methods and sustainable buildings that have less of an impact on
global warming.

SPI commissioned The Carbon Neutral Company in early 2006 to manage its carbon neutralisation task, as part of the developer's corporate social responsibility program of integrating environmental awareness into everyday business activities.

An analysis showed the construction of the three towers would emit about 88,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide without intervention.

SPI were able to reduce 12,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide (14.4%) through value engineering, while the remaining unavoidable emissions were balanced by supporting global projects designed to absorb or prevent the creation of green house gases.

"We are delighted to be the first developer to achieve full carbon neutral status for our project, which is also a first for Qatar," said John Browne, managing director of SBI. "The climate crisis is an urgent issue and we felt it was our responsibility to show what can be done."
