Snohetta designs for RAK Convention and Exhibition Centre unveiled

Designs by Norwegian architects Snohetta International for the RAK Convention and Exhibition Centre have been unveiled at Arabian Travel Market 2008.

Developed by Rakeen, the project is estimated to cost US$400 million and will cover 270,000m² of built up area at the RAK Gateway project, located 150km east of Dubai. The project will be the gateway for the planned new capital city of Ras Al Khaimah.

A 200m high tower will offer a 5-star hotel and views of the Gulf, the surrounding desert and nearby mountains, from which the project draws its design inspiration. This concept provides for an infinite variety of naturally shaded, intimate and protected spaces, around which the multiple uses associated with the development are woven. Ceramics developed by RAK Ceramics will be used in the finishing, in reference to the Emirate's status in ceramics design and production.

"The RAK Convention & Exhibition Centre will be the finest of its kind in the region, not just a place of function, but also an outstanding architectural masterpiece, designed meticulously, allowing for future expansion," said Dr. Imad Haffar, chief operating officer of Rakeen.

The project is estimated to be completed in 2011.
