Al Habtoor Leighton Group's (HLG) new head office in Jumeriah Village South Circle, Dubai, is aiming for platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

With a facilities management input from design stage, the 15,000m2 gross floor area will house up to 1,500 staff.

"The platinum rating is basically about low energy use and having a low impact on the environment, while producing a high efficient, high-rated work environment for the employees to give them minimum stress and maximum performance," said Peter Watson, general manager of associated businesses, HLG.

The building, which should start initial enabling works this month, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.

It is currently in the process of being registered under LEED for New Construction on the international LEED register. "We want to show people in the UAE that as a group we are serious about trying to embed sustainability and green technology into our projects.

"The best way to do that is to spend the time, energy and effort to create an environment for our own staff to show them the benefits of adapting this on a long term basis," explained Watson.

For example, the lighting system installed with be tailored to the individual worker to reduce unnecessary usage.

"If someone wants to come and work after office hours, their working space will be isolated into a silo so they can work and energy use will be limited. Technology will be a focal point for us," Watson added.
