by Lynne Roberts on Tuesday, 13 May 2008
Dubai Police said on Monday it had foiled a plot to smuggle 24 kilograms of heroin valued at $6 million, arresting three Asians and four Africans caught unloading the drug in boxes of oranges at the Al Aweer vegetable market.
Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said police had received a tip-off about a month ago about two gangs bringing heroin into the country, emirates news agency Wam reported.
The men were found to be using containers coming from Pakistan to traffic the drug, Al Mansouri confirmed.
The Anti-Narcotics Department at the CID said on Sunday it had foiled an operation to smuggle heroin worth 615,200 dirhams ($168,000) to a number of foreign countries.
Members of an African gang were arrested after police discovered the drug in a parcel at Dubai cargo village.
