The World to power Oz with islet
by Rob Wagner on Saturday, 17 May 2008
Real estate developer Oqyana World First is creating an island dedicated solely to utility services to power a luxury island cluster in the shape of Australia.
The utility island is one of 22 islands forming the shape of the country and will house a power generation plant, reverse osmosis desalination plant, cooling facility, condenser cooling plant, sewage treatment plant, potable water tank, refuel station, maintenance workshops, fire station, administration offices and worker accommodation.
The cluster is the first fully master-planned island community in Dubai's off-shore 'The World' development.
The project's 50,000m2 utility services island will be located away from the development next to the breakwater and is to make it self-sufficient. It will be engineered for 100% redundancy, by using two utility networks to feed the development.
Wadad AlSuwayeh, CEO of Oqyana World First, said Proman Hill International is the project manager.
The value of that contract, or the contractors for mechanics and engineering works, have not been specified.
