CALIFORNIA DREAMING: Santa Barbara-styled architecture will influence Egypt's New Cairo City project, which will have more than 5,000 homes and expansive parklands.

Exclusive Santa Barbara, famed in the United States for its Spanish and Mediterranean-style architecture, sandy beaches and leafy palm tree-lined streets, is coming to New Cairo City in Egypt.

Emaar Misr for Development SAE last week released the details of the 3.5 million m² project that will have more than 5,000 homes and around a million m² in landscaped and community parks.

Details of contracts and the construction timetable have not yet been announced.

"This is the first time we have revealed the components of the project," said Nivine Williams, an Emaar spokesperson.

The New Cairo City project is patterned after the sophisticated Santa Barbara, California, architecture and allows for residential and mixed-used developments.

The project is located near the American University in Cairo, 20 minutes from the international airport. New Cairo City will feature 1,200 detached homes, 1,200 townhouses and 3,500 apartments.

The community will include a business park with more than 185,000m² of commercial offices and a 90,000m² health care centre.

There will also be two hotels, shopping centres and a school.
