Residents in the UAE are bracing themselves for strong winds that will see large parts of the Gulf state enveloped in a dusty haze over the next three days.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said on Monday in a statement carried by state news agency Wam that moderate to strong northwesterly winds were expected to hit the UAE from Tuesday afternoon.

The centre warned the dust-laden winds could reduce visibility in parts of the country, particularly in the western region.

"The NCMS is strongly advising motorists to take utmost precaution while driving on the highways," Wam said.

The centre also cautioned ships and other vessels that the sea would become rough and "not suitable for marine activities", according to the new agency.

The NCMS urged people with allergies or asthma to stay indoors.
