Remarkable footage of a flying fish has been caught on film by a television crew in the south of Japan.
The video above claims to capture one of the longest recorded flights of this acrobatic animal, British broadcaster the BBC said on Wednesday.
The fish was completely airborne for 45 seconds, beating an American researcher's report in the 1920s about a fish able to fly for 42 seconds.
The fish is seen flying parallel to a ferry, which itself is travelling at about 30 km/h.
The fish is able to continue flying by sometimes skimming the water's surface with its tail fin.
The footage was shot by an NHK crew as it travelled to Yakushima Island on the southern tip of Japan.
The animal's flight-time of 45 seconds must be close to its physical limit, as brachial respiration is impossible while moving through the air, said Junji Yonezawa at the Centre for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Outlying Islands, reported the BBC.
There are some 40 species of "flying fish". They are found worldwide in warmer waters and come from the family known as Exocoetidae.
The animal's ability to fly comes from being able to glide as opposed to powered flapping.
