Egyptian Radio & Television Union (ERTU) has awarded a contract to Harris Corporation for the build-out of its standard-definition/high-definition (SD/HD) news operations in Cairo.

Harris will provide a range of equipment from its broadcast product portfolio including the NEXIO XS video server platform and Velocity NX full-featured SD/HD promotions craft editors. Egyptian dealer, Integrated Systems secured the deal.

"ERTU is an existing user of Harris servers in the newsroom environment, so it was the natural choice to select this server technology from Harris to formulate part of our transition to HD," commented Hamdy Mounir, vice chairman for projects, engineering sector, Egyptian Radio and Television Union. "We were also keen to work with an organisation that enabled close integration between its servers and other vendors' automation solutions, and it was the high level of interoperability that the servers provided that sealed this decision."

As turnaround of material is extremely important in time-critical environments such as news, the fast throughput of material through the NEXIO XS servers allows both high- and low-resolution non-linear editors to start working as material is being ingested.

Journalists can simultaneously browse and edit low-resolution content at their desktops and send the material to playout.

At ERTU, the NEXIO XS servers seamlessly integrate with the AP ENPS newsroom computer system, and playout is handled by Omnibus automation.
