International lighting firms need to establish a local presence to better capitalise on the boom for lighting products and services, the director general of the Professional Lighting Designers' Association has said.

Speaking to Commercial Outdoor Design at this week's Light Middle East show, Alison Ritter said that firms needed to have a local base to be able to respond to the need for lighting experts in the region.

"It's not going to be enough to have people fly in and out all the time. You have to have people here who understand not only the culture, but also the conditions such as the heat," she said.

Training in lighting design was still limited in the region, although courses are available in Bahrain and Dubai, according to Ritter.

She added that she expected more lighting firms would open offices in the region in the future.

Demand for lighting products and the services of lighting designers is sky rocketing in the region on the back of the huge number of construction projects taking place.

The lighting fixtures market is tipped to grow at a compound annual growth rate of almost 7% in the region, against a global average of 4%, according to Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the show.

Growth will be driven by demand for lighting fixtures and systems for commercial, residential and industrial buildings, airports, railways, according to Messe Frankfurt.
