Abu Dhabi-based Maximus Air Cargo has delivered much needed aid to those affected by natural disasters in both Myanmar and China this month, lifting hundreds of tonnes of aid to the region with more flights planned this week, the company said on Monday.

Maximus was the second carrier to be granted landing rights by the Myanmar government after the South Asian country was ravaged by cyclone Nargis earlier this month.

Although the country’s ruling junta have made international aid efforts difficult, the carrier was able to land 90 tons of food, water and medical supplies on behalf of the UAE Red Crescent Association, which arrived within three days of the disaster being declared following Nargis.

“Traffic rights were difficult to obtain for these flights at the last minute, but Maximus's professional team of operations experts used their contacts to ensure that the flights operated without delay,” the company’s president and CEO, Fathi Hilal Buhazza, said on Monday.

Official estimates put the Myanmar death toll at approximately 78,000, with another 56,000 people still missing.

Maximus also delivered relief supplies to Sichuan province in China which was devastated by an earthquake that measured 8.0 on the Richter scale just day’s after the disaster in Myanmar.

Two more flights for the UAE Red Crescent will depart this week, airlifting more than 70 tons of blankets and tents to those China’s worst hit areas.

China’s official death toll following the quake hit 65,080 on Monday, after another 4,520 reported fatalities. Casualty figures, released by the Information Office of the State Council, said 360,058 people were injured in the disaster while 23,150 are still missing.
