Peace deal lifts Lebanese dental market
by James McCarthy on Wednesday, 04 June 2008
Business is starting to pick up again for Lebanon's dentists after the signing of the Doha accord last month, which ended weeks of sectarian violence across the country.
Zgharta-based dentist, Dr Maxim Baini, told MED that business had been very slow during the last several weeks.
"When the trouble was taking place, people were reluctant to leave their homes - they stayed out of harm's way and watched the situation unfold on the television," he said.
Despite the severity of the situation, dentists in the country were able to use past experience to overcome supply issues surrounding equipment and materials.
Baini explained that years of unrest in the country had taught its healthcare professionals to stockpile all necessary materials.
"There have been problems in the past in obtaining things like anaesthetic and painkillers when the airports have been closed to imports.
"We have learnt from this and we always buy more than we need as and when we can, so that if things deteriorate politically, we have enough to get by."
Since the cessation of violence, Baini said that people are now starting to return to their everyday lives, with a renewed sense of optimism.
"Hopefully things will change for the better with the election of our new president," he added.
