Air Arabia's CEO has called for the creation of more low cost airports to accommodate the growing number of budget airlines.
Adel Ali made the announcement to a panel of industry members at the Future Airports Conference this week. The region's first low-cost carrier has a successful Sharjah-based hub and CEO Ali hopes companies will emulate this elsewhere.
With many Middle East airports suffering congestion problems Air Arabia consider the introduction of secondary airports a necessary step. Ali said: "As we move towards the full adoption of open-skies policies and with the highest number of aircraft on order anywhere in the world, the region must invest today in the infrastructure necessary to meet the demands of tomorrow." He added: "Secondary airports are able to maintain costs that are on average 20 per cent below those of their peers."
