All that glitters is not gold

The Middle East is renowned for its ever-changing skyline and originality in architectural design.

Exhibitors at last weeks Domotex flooring exhibition, along with ISH Kitchen & Bathroom and Lighting Middle East, however put their stamp on interior design, allowing the same architectural creativity to seep through the exterior on to every surface of the interior.

In the opening speech of the Designers Corner series of seminars, Hans Bruinsma, a Dubai-based design consultant provided a critique in which he outlined a burning issue amongst the regions interior designers: "Money has been spent on the outside of these buildings, whether it be commercial, residential or apartments, and no one ever thinks about the inside."

Although the Domotex exhibition lacked the much anticipated bustling atmosphere, a diverse collection of flooring designers, manufacturers and distributors lined up from stand to stand to get themselves noticed.

From retro three-dimensional laminates and the sparkle of Swarovski crystal floors to 24-karat gold cork mosaics and hand woven rugs, the exhibition seemed to scream Innovation! Innovation! Innovation! as it unleashed interior designers to a whole new world of creativity.
