Abu Dhabi Ports Co. (ADPC) and Masdar have signed an agreement to work together on carbon dioxide capture and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives at Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ).

The companies said on Wednesday the agreement would pave the way for the introduction of integrated carbon capture facilities at KPIZ.

ADPC Chief Executive Ali Al Badi said the ports company planned to make KPIZ the world’s first green industrial zone.

KPIZ is located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in Taweelah.

The multi-billion dollar project involves the construction of a world-scale container and industrial port in addition to the development of over 100 square kilometres of industrial, logistics, commercial, and residential free zones.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is designed to reduce global warming by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources such as fossil fuel power plants and storing it instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.
