Virtual storage on its way

Virtual server environments will be offered advanced storage capabilities with the introduction of the Veritas virtual infrastructure (VVI) solution in late 2008. According to Symantec, VVI combines new, advanced storage management capabilities from Veritas Storage Foundation with the Citrix XenServer virtualisation technology.

"With Veritas Virtual Infrastructure, Symantec is delivering trusted, proven enterprise-class storage management to x86 virtual server environments," said Rob Soderbery, senior vice president of Symantec's Storage and availability management group.

According to the company, VVI offers key benefits to users including direct control to block storage from a guest virtual server, mirroring across heterogeneous arrays and mature SAN multi-pathing which ensures data availability.

Symantec states that the partnership with XenServer will offer reduced storage costs through the use of shared boot images across multiple virtual servers. It will increase storage utilisation which in turn will reduce over-provisioning, and will also mean that administrators have greater control over the servers and storage through a single application.

The solution also uses a new distributed volume manager specifically designed to deliver advanced storage management capabilities for virtual servers. It makes use of a client server architecture that establishes a unique, individual relationship between each virtual server and its underlying storage, just as if it were a physical server.
