The IP DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) port market has a new leader with Huawei moving into first place in the first part of 2008 ahead of its chief rival Alcatel-Lucent. This move comes in spite of an overall decline in revenues across the entire segment as reported by Infonetics Research.

"2007 was the peak for annual IP DSLAM revenue, as market saturation and substitution with multi-service access platforms (MSAPs) take their toll on this category," said Mark Showalter a directing analyst for broadband networks at Infonetics.

Alacatel-Lucent still remains slightly ahead in terms of overall revenue share with Huawei trailing by less than a point. According to Infonetics, the overall market is headed towards a long term downturn due to ATM DSLAMs and next generation DLCs (data link control protocols) reaching the end of their life cycles.

The overall broadband aggregation market, which is led by Alacatel-Lucent, only made $1.2 billion in the first quarter of 2008 which was an 11% decline on the previous quarter.

"MSAPs will see growth primarily in emerging markets such as India, as service providers increase deployments to support triple play services," concluded Showalter.
