Dubai motorists owe a staggering 70 million dirhams ($19 million) in outstanding traffic fines, the emirate’s traffic department revealed on Monday.

As a result, Dubai police are launching an intense campaign against companies, car rental firms and motorists who do not pay their fines, UAE daily Kaheej Times reported.

Jamal Al Banay, head of traffic violations follow-up at Dubai Police, told the newspaper companies and car rental offices from across the UAE had not paid fines on about 352,905 violations.

This figure included a total of 75,438 traffic violations by Dubai firms and 277,476 traffic violations by companies from other six emirates.

Dubai Police had established a team to collect outstanding amounts from companies, rental offices or individuals, he said.

If the violators do not respond, strict action would be taken against them, he added without giving further details.

The traffic department would also coordinate with authorities of all emirates to trace the violators and collect the fines.

Over the past two months, Dubai police had taken strict action against five car rental units that had failed to pay their accumulated traffic fines, Al Banay warned.
