MORE THAN A PLACE TO SLEEP: The DIC labour villages will include entertainment and sporting facilities for healthier lifestyles.

The construction of five labour villages in Dubai Industrial City (DIC) is running to schedule.

Rashed Al Ansari, vice president of DIC, said that once completed, the five villages would accommodate 62,500 supervisors and labourers, offering investors in the city and across Dubai a chance to provide their employees with a high standard of accommodation.

"We are investing more than US $272 million (AED1 billion) in this project and have so far completed 40% of the construction work across all five villages," he said.

Two will be ready by the end of this year and the remainder will be operating by early 2009. Each village will have 26 residential buildings, offering a total bed space for 12,500 people.

Al Ansari said: "We are not building residential buildings for labourers, we are developing entire villages that offer residents an easier and pleasant living environment with a range of services and facilities from entertainment to shopping and basic amenities such as medical, security and civil defence services."

Al Ansari also said that all the villages would be uniform in design and layout, and would offer three types of rooms that varied according to companies' requirements.

There will be 230 air-conditioned buildings across the five villages. Each village will have seven restaurants, as well as sporting areas dedicated for football, volleyball and cricket. Other planned facilities include a supermarket, shops, a mosque, landscaped walkways, post office and bus parking.

DIC is a dedicated industrial zone with six clusters: food and beverage, base metal, mineral products, chemicals, transport equipment and parts, and machinery.
