Microsoft to support Windows XP til 2014

Microsoft has promised to continue support for its Windows XP operating system until 2014.

According to Information Week, Microsoft senior VP Bill Veghte has sent a letter to major customers in the US, promising that the company will continue to release security patches and critical updates for XP, in recognition of the amount of organizations that are still using the OS.

"Our ongoing support for Windows XP is the result of our recognition that people keep their Windows-based PCs for many years," Veghte wrote.

By 2014, Windows XP will have been in the market for thirteen years, well beyond the normal date for support, and Microsoft should have released Windows 7 in 2009, and based on the usual cycle of a new OS every three years, will also have released or be close to the successor to Windows 7.

While Microsoft will stop selling Windows XP at the end of this month, it is still promoting a program to downgrade Windows Vista to XP, and is also continuing to supply XP to the hardware vendors for use in small form factor ‘netbooks'.
